Tui na – a traditional Chinese bodywork therapy
Tui na medical massage is a system of bodywork using acupressure techniques that has been used in China for many hundreds of years. It still is used and has an important role in modern hospitals and clinics in China for the treatment of many pain conditions that might be treated by a physiotherapist or osteopath/chiropractor in the UK.
In Japan, shiatsu developed from tui na and Chinese Medicine theory, whilst acupressure and reflexology also are derivatives of traditional Chinese bodywork therapy.
Tui na uses many distinctive techniques that you wont find in other massage therapies. There is generally a more consistent and stronger pressure applied than with western techniques. Often a tui na treatment ends with stretches, gentle traction or cupping therapy.
Benefits from tui na acupressure massage
Tui na is beneficial both to our bodies and injured tissues, but also to our minds. You will be guided to a more relaxed state through treatment. The tensions that build up in our bodies contribute to the discomfort, stress and tiredness that we experience in our daily lives. Skilfully drawing the patients’ attention to (and enabling the relaxation of) physical tension will also have a relaxing effect on our minds. This process can lead to the alleviation of many stress-based conditions such as tension headaches, IBS, or anxiety and insomnia.
