Gua Sha
Mr Stefan Chmelik on Gua Sha
Gua Sha is a technique used in Tui Na Massage (Chinese massage) in which the practitioner uses a smooth edged tool to repeatedly scrape the skin of the patient in a specific area. The area is chosen carefully by the practitioner and usually indicate areas of tension and heat, but may also be located on specific channel of energy (or qi). The scraping of the skin prompts the body to release heat towards the surface of the skin and creates an effect which looks like a bruise. Gua sha is not painful, although the results often look very dramatic and can be quite shocking (it’s best not to plan to wear a backless dress following some gua sha on the back). The release of tension and heat feels very good and often results in a very relaxed and peaceful patient!
