Dr Damien Downing on Genomics

For 50 years we have known about Biochemical Individuality — that each of us is unique, with different abilities to deal with the world and its challenges. Now we can look at an individual’s DNA and tell which proteins, enzymes etc it can produce. Science has a long way to go on this — so far we can only examine and interpret about 200 of the 20,000-plus genes in human DNA — but already it is providing useful answers. Particularly relevant in detox issues and in predicting risk of heart disease, mental illness, cancer and osteoporosis.
