Stress and related conditions
Definition:
Stress is, in medical terms, the consequence of the disruption of homeostasis through physical or psychological stimuli. Less simply: it is the condition that results when person-environment interaction leads someone to perceive a painful discrepancy, real or imagined, between the demands of a situation on the one hand and their social, biological, or psychological resources on the other. Stressful stimuli may be mental, physiological, anatomical or physical. Problems managing stress are very common and can be treated in many ways

Stress is a much used and abused word these days. A certain amount of ‘stress’ is needed for all of us, to provide motivation and creativity. However, the level and nature of stress that so many people are under today is quite unnatural, and leads directly to a number of common symptoms and problems, as well as us being much less effective in our lives generally.
Almost every problem is worse when our stress level is higher than we can easily cope with, and this level is different for each person, or even for the same person at different points in their life. There are also some symptoms that are mainly due to and only occur when stressed, such as perhaps anxiety attacks or a feeling that its all too much.
Learning to stress-manage is not so much a luxury as a necessity now in my opinion, and there are a number of ways in which this can be achieved, some of which are done to you, and others which you are taught how to do to yourself.
Acupuncture has an instant beneficial effect for most people, as does massage and cranial osteopathy. I teach lots of people an exercise to suite their needs, such as guided relaxation, breathing techniques or meditation and Mindfulness, and I sometimes give CD’s to practice with at home. Adaptagenic capacity (the ability to handle stress) can be increased using certain herbal formulas and nutritional supplements, as well as being helpful for treating some of the actual symptoms of stress.

Background: A huge number of medical conditions are either directly caused by stress or made much worse by stress. Doctors are fully aware of this but simply telling patients to ‘take it easy and relax’ simply does not work.
People have got into habitual behavioural patterns which are very stressful. To treat the results of stress rather than the causative stress itself, is very superficial medicine and may result in the stress simply manifesting somewhere else in the body.
Autogenic Therapy is a self-help method that induces deep relaxation and relief of the negative effects of stress. A course of Autogenic Therapy is remarkably effective in helping many stress-related conditions such as: high blood pressure, asthma, phobias, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep problems, colitis, muscular pain and tension, migraines and many other physical and psychological problems. Many sports stars and performers also use Autogenic Therapy and other deep relaxation techniques to increase their chances of peak performance at important events.
Provocative Therapy: Once some of the stress has been released and you feel a lot better, a few sessions of Provocative Therapy can often be helpful in dealing with the causes of the stress. Provocative Therapy uses clinical reverse psychology and humorous insights to provoke you to identify the solution to your life problem, articulate it clearly and then enact it in your life.

Rolfing can enhance somatic awareness and expression. If you’re repressing unresolved elements of your history it makes sense that this will be having an affect on your body. If your bodies being restricted it is fair to say that your progress is too.
Rolfing is a fascinating bodywork technique through which we can start to really consider if when your relaxing is your body also relaxing? We might think this is a given but that is not always the case. For your body to genuinely relax it needs to let go of the stresses and strains that stop it. If your body has forgotten how to let go - we can teach it.
