Postural Problems Scoliosis & Lordosis

Definition:

Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine.

Lordosis is the spinal curve of the low back and neck. The term is used to refer to abnormally increased curvature (hyperlordosis) or to the normal curvature (normal lordosis)

Liesl D Hinkly on Postural Problems/Misalignment, Scoliosis/Lordoisis

Rolfing is traditionally renowned as a technique to bring about postural re-integration and harmony through re-education of the myofascial matrix. Re-learn the habits of a lifetime. Sometimes the body realises that the way you sit, stand, breath and even sleep are patterns that no longer work for you. Many people say to me that they feel "off kilter" or not "balanced "and that they've felt like this for sometime. Other people wait for pain to indicate that something is not right within their bodies. When I work with you I like to really get to know you and your patterns. If you have been in a car accident and you saw the colliding car coming from your left it is possible that somewhere in the muscles around the left of your neck the brace response will still be activated. This might be causing tension headaches due to the fact that the muscles are struggling to let go. This can affect your whole body no matter how long ago the accident was. Systemic problems that occur with breathing, circulation, digestion and generally the functioning of organs may be caused, triggered or affected by poor, compressed and collapsed posture.

Scoliosis and its patterns of compensation

Rolfing uses thorough and slow strokes with gentle and deep pressure to address all of the layers involved within the intricate patterns of the body. Your body knows what alignment is and due to it’s fascinating relationship with gravity it is always trying to “right” misalignment and bring your body back into optimum functioning. I find it such a beautiful technique when we can really give the body space and time to reveal its layers. Scoliosis inevitably engages the body in a process of compensation and often it is not initially apparent where the core of the scoliosis lies however over ten sessions we can methodically take care of each of the layers of the pattern and re-educate the body about what alignment feels like.
