Body-image and self-esteem issues
Definition:
Body/Self-Image and esteem issues: with a positive or healthy body image, a person has a real perception of her size and shape, and feels comfortable with their body. With a negative body image, a person has a distorted perception of thier shape and size, compares their body to others, and feels shame and anxiety about their body. Being unhappy with your body can affect how you think and feel about yourself as a person. A poor body image can lead to emotional distress, low self-esteem, dieting, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Developing a positive body image and a healthy mental attitude is crucial to happiness and wellness. People with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) worry about how they look. They’re obsessed with the belief that there’s something wrong with their physical appearance.
Dr Brian Kaplan on Body/Self-Image and esteem issues:
Ones body image is a powerful indicator of one’s sense of self worth and self esteem. We live in a world where we are inundated with so-called ‘perfect’ body images. Many of these are not even real – having been doctored with Photoshop and other airbrushing techniques! Nevertheless body image issues are a huge psychological problem in society. Hundreds of thousands of people are deeply concerned by the shape and size of their bodies, breasts and genitals and are prepared to spend large amounts of money on ‘remedying’ these so called defects with breast enlargement (or reduction!), penis enlargement surgery, hair transplants and other forms of expensive plastic surgery. Of course there are people who do have genuine physical problems that may actually need surgery but these are a tiny, tiny percentage of the people who think they have a problem with their bodies but actually are quite normal.
I have found Provocative Therapy an excellent way of dealing with body image issues and of increasing self esteem. In as few as four sessions you could be warmly and humorously provoked into asserting yourself and increasing your self esteem enormously – thus saving you thousands of pounds in completely unnecessary plastic surgery which probably would not have solved your self esteem issue anyway.

When we work together we will be considering the patterns that you live by and understanding where they have come from. Sometimes apparently insignificant experiences from your early years can lead to a distorted body image that can be limiting and out of date. I think incredible work can be done when we start to honestly look at the elements and experiences that make you who you are. When we put this into the context of the body we can see how some parts of the body can be isolated simply by the way we feel about them-which in turn can interrupt healing and integration . How you feel about your body is central to how your body feels. Your body thrives off feeling whole and together, this is after all part of it's design.
